Maybe I will get to meet Mickey!

So, I just got back from EA two weeks ago and now I'm off again. Yes, I am skipping a week of classes to go to the "happiest place on earth" with my family. I am so happy to get out of Pullman for a week. You're probably thinking, "haven't you only been back for two weeks." And, yes, I have. But still I'm very ready to leave permanently and any small reprieve from this place brings joy to my heart. Now I just sound cynical. I promise I am enjoying WSU as much as possible...it's just time for a change. Remember your last few months of High School? How ready you are to leave and move on...that's where I am right now.
For a week I am going to play tourist at Disneyland and Universal Studios. There is a chance that we'll get to see Jay Leno too...
When I get back maybe I'll put up pictures from both EA and Disneyland....

The Joys of Jet Lag (a somewhat short summary)

Earlier this week we returned from our journey abroad. Sorry it has taken me so long to post this blog. It's actually been a "draft" since Monday. I just haven't had the time to finish it and post it.

Going back was so good for my heart. However, a week was not long enough to spend back in my other "hometown" on the other side of the world. It was such a blessing to go back and see people and places that are so dear to my heart. Honestly, coming back to Pullman was kind of depressing knowing that I still have to graduate before I can move on in my life.

My heart was so refreshed going back to East Asia. It felt like I never left as I navigated the streets on bike and taxi and bus. Seeing old friends was a blessing. I got to spend lots of time catching up with people. I could definitely see myself moving back someday for an extended time, but I guess until then I will have to dream about it and continue to ask God, "when?"

Here's a recap of our time:
Monday we arrived in EA and waited for our cab driver to show up. When he did he was also carrying a sign that so appropriately read, "Mr. Steven." He got all our luggage into his car (amazingly) and it felt so normal not having a seat belt to wear and speeding along the highway with EA sights and sounds all around us. The ride took longer than usual because of traffic, but we finally arrived at the house of Jason and Rose and were reunited with old friends and met new ones. I dished out all the packages that had been accumulating in my room the weeks prior to leaving. Not much of the conversation was retained by my over-tired mind and eventually I made my way to bed.

Tuesday morning I woke up at 6am ready to go. Oh, jet lag. :-) Actually it worked out well getting up early throughout the week because it gave me time to talk to God and get into the Word. I got to finally meet Maggie and catch up with Rose a little in the morning. The guys came over and we planned out the week. Lunch was with the guys from last year at one of our favorite restaurants eating amazing food. Yum. That afternoon with met up with our dear friend Elle who took us out to New Campus and showed us how much everything has changed in the 8 months since we left. It was amazing walking around and seeing all the paths done and grass growing where there used to be dirt plots. The library that was being built all last year was finsihed and we took a self-guided tour in the small glass elevators and marveled at the room of 1,000 computers; each one being occupied by a student engrossed in anything but "academic reading" as the door suggested. For dinner we met Rose and Jason at the "Chicken Taco" restaurant and stopped off for some Banana Roti before heading back for the night.

Wednesday morning it was raining. Sad. We met up and headed to the city museum (which was also new) and were impressed with the presentation and creativity of some of the displays. Lunch was at Jack's for sentimental sake and after that we met back up with the current team to go out sharing on campus. I got to go with Elle and we talked to a room full of girls. One girl was especially interested in the Bible and it was so cool to talk to her and hear her questions. I'm excited for Elle to follow up with her and see what God is doing in her heart. It was fun just to talk to them and escape into their world for an afternoon. Dinner was at the Tree Restaurant with all of Steven and David's main guys from last year. Big John joined us too. I got the chance to try something I was told was "sea mushroom" only to find that it tasted nothing like mushroom and had the consistency of a sponge. As I chewed it continued to puff back up in my mouth. Maybe the purple stripes should have warned me.

Thursday morning we went shopping. :-) Got some pearls and ended up at the vase shop (thanks Matt for introducing us to this novelty) where we each got an EA vase to take home. It was fun wandering around the shop. Honestly, I could have bought five vases but there was no way to take all those on the plane. Lunch was with the team and we shared some awesome food and conversation. That afternoon I headed out to New Campus by myself where I got to see Katie, one of my girls from last year, and some other girls who are involved in the fellowship on campus. It was so fun to catch up and spend time together. Plus, Katie and another friend of ours helped me get some headphones for about $5 since my current ones weren't really holding up their own. For dinner I met with Liz at Starbucks. She's another one of the girls I worked with last year and is also a dear friend of mine. She was so cute! And even showed up on her e-bike. We laughed and talked about life, God and boys (of course). I think that afternoon catching up with old friends was the best for my heart.

Friday morning we left our "hometown" and headed into the City to visit more friends. It was sad leaving Rose and Jason and saying goodbye to Maggie. I wish I could've had longer than a week to spend with them. I had a blast catching up with Rose during my stay at their place and playing with Maggie. It felt like I never left. We got to City via train (what were we thinking with all that luggage?!?). My "rolling" duffel was no longer rolling by the time we got and Steven the "bi-polar, analytical computer jock" piled my duffel on his suitcase and tied them together with shirt. Only in EA would we be able to do something that looked that silly and not be stared at because of it (not that we weren't being stared at, but it was because we were Americans). Right after getting off the train we headed to Starbucks and got to spend a few hours with the Bird and Becky! I didn't think we would get to see our two other Nats from last year, but it worked out that we could meet up with them. It was such a sweet time hearing how their year is going and how much Bird loves being married. :-) I love those girls to pieces. That afternoon we ventured over to Katie and Georgia's where we were met with the biggest hugs ever and brought upstairs to their apartment overlooking the City. It was so good to see them. I left and had coffee with Bethany. I think that was good for both of us and we picked up just where we had left off. I love that about my friendships with others over there. Everyone we met up with, even though I hadn't kept in contact with them very well since I left, it was like we never left. Friendships rekindled over dinner at Moon River as Cam and Steph joined us. Afterwards some bowling before finally I crashed at Katie and G's, exhausted from all the visiting.

Saturday morning I got up early again and got a little time with Georgia visiting before Steven, David and I headed out to be tourists. We spent the day walking around and seeing the sights of the City. That night we went to an acrobats show. It was such a good way to end our time there. It felt like we could conquer anything as we were able to get from subway to taxi and back again. One day I would love to live there and experience life in EA again.

Sunday was our day home. We got out to the airport and began our travels home. Coming back wasn't bad. We flew through Tokyo and the flights were overall considerably shorter. Not sure why we never thought about that before. We also got bumped up to Economy Plus for the 8 hour flight over the Pacific. It was glorious to have the extra leg room.

Sorry this update is kind of rushed and summarized. There really were too many memories to mention them all. It was great seeing friends, and yet there were friends that I didn't get to see.
A week is not long enough...

Leaving on a Jet Plane...

Tomorrow morning I fly out to East Asia for a week of fun, friends, sharing Jesus and really good food. Steven, David Pick and I are leaving this morning to Seattle where we'll stay the night before flying out tomorrow morning at 8am. If you need some things to pray for, pray that: God will show up in big ways, we'll have safe travels over and while we're there, we would be an encouragement to the team and to our friends there, God will work in the hearts of the students and in our hearts, and that it would be a refreshing time for everyone. Last night thinking about it kind of made me stressed out. I really want to be able to enjoy this trip and have my heart refreshed. I'm excited to see what God does!
My church back home has blessed me so much! I'm already over my goal for financial support to go and I heard there are still more people interested in giving towards East Asia. It is such a blessing to have such an amazing church behind me and praying me through. I think back to last year and how much I know PCC and the people there prayed for me. Out of all my teammates I know I was extremely blessed and it showed in my heart and how the Lord continued to provide for me all year.
Also during my daydreams of life back in EA, I think about how much has changed. Especially with Steven and me. How just a year ago it was so different. I'm kind of anxious to see how everyone reacts to us dating. Not that they would react in a bad way, but it was weird for Steven and me at first. Overall, I'm really excited to see people and bring them their assortment of fruit snacks, Hot Tamales and other mail-order items that have been showing up the past few weeks.
I love traveling. I can't wait to get on the plane and know that I'm headed overseas again to more adventures.

*This is my 100th post and as such I thought it needed a shout-out.

Maybe I should start packing...

I leave in three days to EA and I have yet to pack one thing. I do, however, have a pile in my room of stuff that has been shipped to me and pick up by me to bring in for all my wonderful friends. It's amazing the stuff that can't be found in EA...yet, almost all of it is made in EA. Such as the infant helmet that Rose ordered and had shipped to me: made in EA. Other requests from EA'ers have been for comodities such as chocolate chips, hot tamales, fruit snacks, French's french fried onions and tootsie rolls. Ah, the small comforts of life...
In other news, Matt Mikalatos has unofficially declared this week the "Her Majesty Alexis Youngs Celebratory Week of Congratulation and Adoration" in honor of Alexis' birthday. I don't personally know Alexis, but I do know that she is in Croatia on Stint with a fellow Coug named Sunny. And even though Sunny is a fellow Coug, I think I've only met her once...if I've ever really officially met her. My friends know Sunny and Sunny knows Alexis. Anyways, Happy Birthday Alexis. Congratulations for a whole post about you on the most looked at blog in the Crusade realm.

Lesson of the day...

If you are living overseas and want to surprise your wife by getting her a video iPod case for her upcoming birthday, keep it a surprise. Don't send it to a friend to bring over without letting this friend know that it is a birthday surprise. This will ultimately result in said friend-of-wife emailing wife asking, "I got a pink video iPod cover in the mail today. I'm assuming it's yours...is it?" And thus making the so-called surprise birthday gift no longer surprising.
On a good note: Rose likes pink. :-)

Two things....

I am so excited this weekend!! There are two reason for this state of emotional bliss. Reason one is I found out yesterday that I get to go back here for one week in March...

Lots of people...

Lots of bikes!!!

And lots of people on bikes!!!

So yeah, that's reason numero uno. The second reason I'm on an emotional cloud nine is the fact that The Amazing Race: All Stars starts tonight!!! And my alltime favorite team is returning to compete: Uchenna and Joyce!! I love them!
Ah, the mundane and significant details in life...

SNL - The Dakota Fanning Show

Sometimes I think I spend too much time on the internet. Then I run across gems like this and I think my time must have been well spent.
Dakota Fanning is one of my favorites. Ever since she was in "I am Sam" I have enjoyed her movies and acting ability. I thought this SNL skit was hilarious...basically, because it plays up on Dakota's "adult" attitude and political convictions. Not to mention the fact that she has never been nominated for an Academy Award while other young starletts have...Enjoy!

New Theme Song

You Don't Know How it Feels
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Let me run with you tonight
I'll take you on a moonlight ride
There's someone I used to see
But she don't give a damn for me

But let me get to the point, let's roll another joint
And turn the radio loud, I'm too alone to be proud
You don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels to be me

People come, people go
Some grow young, some grow cold
I woke up in between
A memory and a dream

So let's get to the point, let's roll another joint
Let's head on down the road
There's somewhere I gotta go
And you don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels to be me

My old man was born to rock
He's still tryin' to beat the clock
Think of me what you will
I've got a little space to fill

So let's get to the point, let's roll another joint
And let's head on down the road
There's somewhere I got to go
And you don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels
No, you don't know how it feels to be me

You don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels
No, you don't know how it feels to be me

It is a violation of Federal law...

My latest discovery has been the "Directions for Use" label on the bottom of my Kleenex tissue box. It reads, "It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling. Use only as a facial tissue."
Hmmm...my first thought: what other uses are there? My second thought: oh wait...
Yes, I have used Kleenex brand tissues for things other than "only as a facial tissue." First, I think Kleenex brand tissues are great for dusting. Many times I'm at my computer and the screen is dusty or my "workspace" (usually more like lack thereof, but you get the picture) seems to have quite a bit of dust on it. What do I do? Go and grab a dust rag? No. A paper towel? No. I go for the box of Kleenex brand tissue placed within reach to wipe away the dirt and grime. A violation of Federal law? Perhaps. Another use for the Kleenex brand tissue is in the bathroom as a back up to the toilet paper. You all know what I'm talking about. Its too late because you've already committed to the toilet and the toilet paper is out, so you painstakingly reach for the box of Kleenex brand tissue on the counter and use that to wipe your worries away. Usually this box will sit by the toilet for at least one day until someone more responsible uses the toilet and goes and finds the stockpile to replenish the paper supply.
I'm sure there are also countless others ways Kleenex brand tissue has been used "in a manner inconsistent with its labeling." Some other ways I came up with are: napkin, temporary band aid, gift wrap, fake snow, stuffing, etc.
So, have I violated Federal law for using Kleenex brand tissue as a dust rag? Or as toilet paper? I'll let you be the judge.

Coolp...

Did you know that you can link to your facebook from your blog? Yup, you sure can. I actually am doing this just to see if it works.... Facebook me!
Wow...it did the whole "facebook me" thing on its own. Crazy...

I was there...

Last night WSU went on to beat the Zags 77-67 in one very exciting, intense game. It was fun to be in Beasley with it almost sold out. The last five minutes of the game were amazing! Anyways, apart from the game itself my favorite part of the evening was when the guy sitting behind me and Jess McFaul said, "our cheerleaders aren't anywhere near naked enough." I can't discredit his personal opinion, however, I'm sure the half time show with the Crimson girls gained his approval.

Whoo-hoo!

My blog is working! For the past month it wasn't able to be viewed...and I have no idea why. But now, thankfully, it is up and running again. Not that I've been blogging a lot since my return to this side of the Pacific Ocean, but still, at least now it is an option.

This is what I've been doing...

So I haven't blogged in a really, really long time. Honestly, I don't have as much to say. Or, there are things to say, I just don't really want to blog about them. I mean, do you really want to hear about all my exams and lack of homework that I do??? So...here's a picture of what I really do in my free time. And you think I'm kidding. Ok, maybe I am weird...

Too funny...

How would you feel if you were a CNN anchor and forgot to turn off your wireless microphone after your broadcast? How about if you were in the bathroom with your microphone still on? During a Presidential speech?

Check this out for a Letterman Top Ten list of excuses...

Brainwashing

I decided that when I have kids I'm going to "Christianize" all the children's book I read them. This ephiphany came after reading some children's books to Shelley for her class on literature (she's going into elementary education). Some examples from stories (my additions in italics):

"Baby Sam is sick! We should pray for him!"

"I'm going next door to meet the new girl and invite her over for peanut-butter cookies and teach her about Jesus!"

"Hi! I'm Alice. I'm a Christian. What's your name?"

And last but not least...

One fish
Two fish
Red fish
JESUS fish!!!

Shower Conversations

Friday morning while rushing through my shower to make it to work on time, I overheard this conversation. Oh the joy of living in the dorms with 50 other girls! (mostly freshmen)
(Names have been changed)

A & B are roommates...

A: I don't remember anything from last night. I got so wasted!

B: Yeah, I know! It got crazy...

A: Yeah, this morning I woke up and rolled over in bed and was like, 'who the f*** is in B's bed?!'

B: Oh don't worry. Nothing happened.

I love WSU! :-)

Humility

This might get deep. The other day I was spending some quality time with God (which was very much needed) and I felt really convicted. Pride is an issue that I struggle with a lot. I think many of us could agree that it is definitely a tool used by the enemy in our lives to put a wedge between us and God. I was prompted to read in Jeremiah 29. Verses 11-14 really stuck out to me. As I read them I felt God calling to me from the Word. He has plans for me. He wants to give me a hope and a future. If only I will continue to seek Him with all of my heart then I will find Him. After digesting these verses I journaled, "Sometimes I shrink back from what God has called me to. I shrink back because I don't think He is really calling me...I don't feel capable. Well, if God is really calling me to something then I need to step up and do it. Because if I don't, He'll call someone else. The cry of my heart is to serve Him which means that I need to serve Him by doing what He says, what He calls me to...."
This doesn't stop here. Then I picked up the book Drawing Near by John Bevere. The chapter was on humility. It talked about the three aspects of humility: obedience, dependence and one's view of oneself. All three hit right at home, but the one that really hit me hard was dependence. In it, Bevere used the example of Joshua and Caleb entering the promised land and encouraging the Israelites that they can take the land after all the other elders were afraid. I felt like I tend to be one of the other elders. I'm a realist. Too much of one. Instead of doing what God has called me to (knowing full well that all things are possible through Him) I look at my own abilities and situation and say, "surely this is not what God is asking me to do." [see excerpt from journal above] I almost feel humble when I discredit myself. However, that is not true humility. True humility is recognizing God's directives as better than our own (obedience), following through even though we don't understand (dependence) and knowing full well that on our own, apart from Him, we could never accomplish it but through Him we are more than conquerers (view of oneself). That is true humility. When David went to the battlefield to meet his brothers they called him arrogant for calling them out for hiding from Goliath (2 Samuel 17:28). David was considered arrogant! What did he do? He went in the power of God and killed the giant. God lifts up the humble. He exalts those who are humble and brings down the prideful. I'll end with a quote from Drawing Near (pg 133):
Keep in mind, Scripture shows repeatedly the dwelling place of God is the high places, and the dwelling place of demonic forces is the lower parts. You will see over and over throughout Scripture pride and rebellion associated with the low, and humility and the fear of the Lord with the high. To be lifted up is to dwell with God in intimacy!

Where I've Been

Lately I haven't really been home. My sisters notice. Kelly reminds me every time I come back home how I'm never here. But it's hard to be home after being gone for a year. It's hard to try and put up with being a part of a family again. Not that I'm "putting up" with them in a bad way, it's just different. Hopefully some of you know how that is. The girls are at that age where everything turns into a fight, including with me. Most of the time it's fun when I'm with them, but then in a split second the tables turn and someone is mad at someone else. So, this summer I've wandered a lot. Fun wandering though, to visit friends and have fun elsewhere. There were weddings to go to and people to see. I can't believe how fast this summer has gone. I thought I would see more movies than I have. I've only been to two. Crazy, huh?
So now I'm getting ready to go back up to WSU. I've been cleaning out my old room so Kelly can move in completely. Going through all sorts of clothes and stuff I forgot I had and boxing it up so five to ten years from I can unpack it and wonder why I kept it. You know, the fun stuff. Kristen and Katie switched rooms too, so we've been moving them in and out and reorganizing. The upstairs is a mess. Mom keeps telling me to finish going through all my stuff, but it's so overwhelming. I get distracted easily and would much rather go and watch TV than sort through another box of clothes from High School. But it's getting done. I'm almost ready for school.
School. Yes, it's that time of year. August. I'll head up to WSU to join my freshman roommate next week. Yes, freshman roommate. I feel sorry for her, having to live with me. It'll work out. Hopefully soon I'll have a single. I'm excited to start school. A little nervous too. Not sure exactly what to expect. I know it will be a good year. My last year in college. Nine months from now I'll be graduating. Hopefully by then I'll have figured out what I want to do for my life (or at least the next 2-5 years). It's scary to think about really. I've been a student for so long I can't imagine life without school. I'll just continue to pray and trust God with that. Eventually I'll figure it out, and whatever it is I'm sure I'll be excited about it.

Emotional Endings

Leaving East Asia was hard. There were so many people to say goodbye to. The entire last week was emotional. Not to mention since Michelle left two weeks early it didn't make it any easier. Kelley and I had an emotional goodbye in San Francisco. She was the hardest one to leave. I can't imagine not seeing her everyday. Sometimes I still wake up thinking I'm going to see her or Michelle.
San Francisco was exciting. I have decided that all American boys are cute (for the most part) and that America's smell is the best in the world. I haven't really hit reverse culture shock as of yet. Only when I'm in large groups of "foreigners" do I feel a little uncomfortable. Other than that, I'm loving it! America's great...and in other ways, not so great. I especially love shopping in stores that carry my size! That's exciting.
Last weekend Steven and Michelle came down to visit and Patrick even tagged along. It was fun to hang out. They even helped me present at church that Saturday night. I love sharing what God has been doing over the past year. However, I feel like no matter how long I share it will never be long enough. I don't feel like I can adequately describe the way that God has worked in my life and the lives of others in East Asia. Even when I try, I can't do it. I have learned so many things and seen God work in so many ways, it would take a whole year to explain it all. I guess that's one of the limitations of the human race. We cannot describe eternal things the way we want. Right now I'm reading Gilead by Marianne Robinson. And there's a line in there that I think really applies to this thought process. To preface, the book is a journal of a 70 year old pastor written to his son. In it, Pastor John Ames says, "I think the attempt to defend belief can unsettle it, in fact, because there is always an inadequacy in argument about ultimate things." I am seeing this become more true in my life. Maybe not in the same way, but through explanations rather than arguments. As humans, we have so little to define the Ultimate. And that is where faith steps in, when you can no longer explain and argue. Before this gets too theological, I want to add that I do think my faith has grown so much this year. If not for any other reason than I have seen God deeply and intimately and experienced Him in unexplainable ways.

It's been awhile

Sorry I haven't been blogging. My life is in an uproar. I just got back two weeks ago and have been extremely busy. I will try and keep you posted. Maybe. It's just that now I'm back in the States, I feel like I don't have as much to blog about. Exciting things don't happen to me everyday. I could make stuff up, but that wouldn't be cool. Or maybe it would...hmmm. Ok, I'll post more in other entries. This is my "I'm sorry for not posting" post. More to follow.
